Wow, That’s a Good Song: Justin Vernon with the Eau Claire Memorial Jazz Band, “For Emma”

By Sarah on January 7, 2010

Here’s a peek into my music nerd past: once upon a time, I was in my high school’s jazz band.  While we did our fair share of standards, we mixed it up with some songs of the moment — I was in high school when the whole swing revival was happening, after all.  (Okay, well, our director also threw in a lot of random songs that were neither jazz nor ’90’s swing revival, but that is a different story for a different time.)  Anyhow, while I often questioned a jazz band playing current pop favorites, I would have been all about this set of music.

Justin Vernon, better known as Bon Iver, is an alum of Eau Claire Memorial High School, and returned to do a set with their jazz band last April, covering both Bon Iver tunes and jazz standards. Guys, this just makes the band nerd in me so happy, you have no idea.  Also, these kids sound way better than my high school band did.

Go find another lover;
To bring a… to string along!
With all your lies,
You’re still very lovable.
