If you’ve been following along here, you’ll know that I am a huge fan of random road trips to far-flung places, all in pursuit of Good Music. It’s a trait also found in my partner-in-musical-crime, Mel, given her many reports from Places Where She Does Not Live. Granted, I don’t always go through with my wacky road trip plans, but I like to plan them out anyway. This year, I’m contemplating a trip out west for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival (in Telluride, Colorado), which just announced its full 4-day line-up. Telluride is in its 38th year, if my math is correct, and in addition to a whole host of amazing musicians, they also offer workshops, songwriter/performer competitions, special intimate late-night concerts, and family-oriented areas on the festival grounds.

Tickets are on sale now. 4-day passes will set you back $185, and single day passes are available for $65.

Watch out, Colorado, you may be getting a Midwestern visitor.

Not being from Canada, I’m not exactly clued in to the musical going-ons of our gigantic neighbor to the north. But the Winnipeg Folk Festival, scheduled for July 7 through 11, is definitely something I should know about, despite the fact that it’s far away… oh, wait, Winnipeg is only a two-hour flight away. Never mind, it isn’t that far. Huh.

The festival, which has been around since 1974, recently released their 2010 lineup, and what a lineup it is.

Blog favorite Andrew Bird is who first caught my eye, but the rest of the lineup is incredibly solid. Other featured acts include the Avett Brothers, Colombian rock band Aterciopelados, Debashish Bhattacharya, The Duhks, The Dodos, Emmylou Harris, Geoff Muldaur, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Sarah Harmer, a tribute to the Mississippi Sheiks (ever wonder where Bird’s line of “she’s got blood in her eyes for you” come from? do some Googling), The Swell Season, Tao Seeger, The United Steel Workers of Montreal, The Wailin’ Jennys, William Elliott Whitmore, and Works Progress Administration.

In addition to five days of music, the festival also has an outdoor art exhibition, art throughout the campgrounds, and a handmade craft village. Oh, yeah, and there’s a “quiet campground”, too, for people who don’t want their sleeping area to be an all-night party.

Single day, five day, and camping passes are available for sale now.

BRB, guys, trying to figure out how to get to Canada.

Good morning, internet! I may still be recovering from my Andrew Bird-filled weekend (a review and photos of his second show will be up later), but there is, of course, no rest for the weary. There are several great shows going on this week, including a whole bunch at the newly opened Lincoln Hall; Ted Leo on the 25th is the official opening event.

I’ll be missing many of these great shows because I’ve got two of my own going on, which are, of course, helpfully on the list below. Check out Chicago’s finest all-clarinet ensemble, the Licorice Sticks, on the 23rd or 25th, in a couple of delightfully spooky productions, complete with costumes and guest performers. Yours truly will be there, rocking suspenders and a fedora. For real.

The Dodos, Bottom Lounge. 8 pm, $15
