The entire world is gearing up for SXSW. I’m gearing up for reading tons of great blog posts about SXSW.

This week, I’ll definitely be at the Hockey show at Lincoln Hall. Hopefully, the power won’t go out on them like it did at Lollapalooza. I’m debating going to see Sonos tomorrow night; they’re an a cappella group and I’m a sucker for stuff like that. And that SXSW Send-off party at the Hideout looks too good to pass up. There’s a free show by JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound tonight at the Empty Bottle, but I also think that and they’re als playing at the Tonic Room on Wednesday, though I can’t confirm that since the only place I remember reading about it was on MySpace, which I can’t call up here at work.

Also, I don’t know what’s so magical about that Jeff Tweedy show at the Vic, because that’s one steep price tag.

Happy Monday, all! I had great plans for getting some album reviews written up over the weekend, but instead I spent my time feeling miserable and sick and sleeping on the couch while watching Dirty Jobs reruns. What a life.

It’s a pretty low-key week for music here. If you’ve got the time on Sunday, go check out Chris O’Brien and David Berkeley at Uncommon Ground. I’m not too familar with O’Brien’s music, but I’m a fan of David Berkeley, who reminds me of Damien Rice vocally. If I can ever string together useful sentences again (thanks, cold medications), I’ll have a review of Berkeley’s latest album, Strange Light, up this week.

Not much going on this week, but hey, it’s the holidays, there’s some expectation to spend time with loved ones or something. I don’t know. There are still some interesting things going on, though. There are two nights of the do-it-yourself Messiah, where the audience gets the music and gets to sing along, and for the third year in a row, I’ve forgotten to get tickets to go. Schubas has a holiday party, complete with live band karaoke. Lincoln Hall, meanwhile, has a benefit performance put on by various women-in-rock from Chicago, for the CAWC Greenhouse Shelter, a shelter for abused women and children.

My musical week can be pretty easily summed up in two words: Andrew Bird. For everyone else who isn’t as enthralled as I am at the prospect of watching Mr. Bird do his thing in a church, or who couldn’t get tickets, here’s the rest of what I find interesting this week in Chicago. But I’ve got to admit, it looks like anyone I would find even vaguely interesting has chosen to steer clear of Chicago for the beginning part of the week. No complaints here; with the exception of missing out on the Metric show (which, being at the Cubby Bear, I would have just complained about the entire time), I’m not seeing anything that I’m too heartbroken to miss.

Also: Our Lady Peace? Sister Hazel? No, seriously, what’s up with the 90s band resurgence here? I’m starting to get a little concerned.

I am a bit sad about missing out on the greatness that is Second City’s 24-Hour benefit show, which I’m missing out on more because of not being able to leave the day job just to go to concerts. But it should be a great time, and the money goes to provide presents for needy children in Chicago.
