I first heard Zapruder Point’s (Chicagoan Dan Phillips) music earlier this year, whenever he opened for Whitehorse (Canadian duo Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland). Â I am generally a fan of the whole guy-with-guitar thing, and even more a fan of the local-guy-with-guitar thing, so I was pleased. Â (I’m also a fan of interesting covers, so the fact that he closed his set with a Madonna cover made me very joyful.)
He returns with his latest release, a collection of short songs which is to be the first of four EPs he plans on putting out this year. Â The songs have a somewhat lo-fi sound, with Phillips’ voice and his guitar being the main focus over some light percussion and backing vocals. Â The songs are short and to the point, so don’t expect much fluff or filler here. Â The real stand out track is “Lisa Pruett Will Have Her Revenge on Coventry”, which could be his very own take on a murder ballad. Â That track was one of my favorites that he performed when I saw him at Schubas, so I was happy to see it pop up on this album. Â All of the tracks clock in at under three minutes, making Buildings vs People an easy album to take a chance on.
The EP is available now on Bandcamp, with a pay-what-you-want option for digital files, or $8 for the 7″ vinyl.
