Hooray for Covers! Alex Winston, “White Blank Page”

By Sarah on November 14, 2010

I would like to submit this without comment, because I am still unsure as to how I feel about it, but I know myself, I’m unable to keep my mouth shut sometimes.

HeavyRoc Live Sessions: Alex Winston – White Blank Page (Mumford and Sons Cover) from HeavyRoc Music on Vimeo.

Detroit-native Alex Winston actually covered a second Mumford & Sons song, “The Cave”, on her recent EP, The Basement Covers, which is available for free download from Heavy Roc Music.  I prefer this live cover of “White Blank Page”, however.  I feel like her version of “The Cave” loses all of the intensity and drive of the original.  It’s an interesting re-imaging of the song, but not one that I particularly agree with.  Her cover of “White Blank Page”, however, is much better, as she makes it her own but doesn’t lose any of what makes the original so great.

You can see Alex Winston in Chicago on January 16 at Lincoln Hall, opening for Little Dragon.
