April in Review
I almost titled this May in Review, that's how behind and confused I am. I actually started the mix at the end of the month, and then, well, life happened. But anyhow. Here, have a little mix of songs I've been loving or rediscovering this past month.
Concert Review: Over the Rhine and Lucy Wainwright Roche, SPACE 4/29
Karin and Linford aren't on the road promoting any particular album; their most recent album of new material is 2007's The Trumpet Child. They're on the road because they love making music.
Hooray for Covers! The Breaking Winds, "Lady Gaga Saga"
There are few things that amuse me more than hilarious covers. A capella choirs, groups with strange instrumentation, whatever. Do a cover well and make me laugh and you've already won. With that in mind, check out this thoroughly amusing Lady Gaga medley.
Concert Review: Chris Buehrle Band, Jeffrey David, Danny Chaimson, and Murley Shertz, Double Door
The tenth anniversary show for Shoeshine Boy Productions was an opportunity to get to see local music, featuring four local (or local-ish) acts on the stage of the Double Door.
Wow, That's a Good Song: The Right Now, "Before I Know Your Name"
This song -- and The Right Now in general -- have so many things that I love: a local connection, a powerful female vocalist, catchy melodies, big sound, and a horn section. I'm in love, y'all.
Concert Review: The Antlers with Phantogram, Lincoln Hall
If Peter Silberman had chosen to record Hospice in a studio, with all the technological wizardry and bells and whistles available to him, I think it would have come out sounding a lot like their show last month at Lincoln Hall.
This Week in Great Music: 5/3 - 5/9
It looks like a quiet week, but I find myself strangely busy. I'll be checking out the Laura Marling show tomorrow night, and Jerome Holloway's show on Friday. I saw him open for Nneka in February and thought he was really good, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with a headlining spot. Saturday also has some strong line-ups of local bands, both at Bottom Lounge and at the Beat Kitchen.
Wow, That's a Good Song: Peter Bradley Adams, "Longer I Run"
Peter Bradley Adams, formerly of eastmountainsouth, has been making beautiful folk-rock type music as a solo endeavor since 2005. There's something very soothing about his voice; it's one I could easily get lost in.
Concert Review: Robbie Fulks and Eliza Gilkyson, Hideout, 4/19
Robbie and Eliza traded songs back and forth, with each helping out with guitar and backing vocals on the other's songs. The whole night had the feeling of being in someone's living room, listening to people joke and tell stories and reminisce.
Wow, That's a Good Song: Richard Walters, "Brittle Bones"
Yet another young British guy with a beautiful voice, who says on his MySpace that he "want[s] to go to America, buy a three piece suit, some boots and a trilby hat from Goodwill and tour Dairy Queens." A+, sir, A+. I don't know what's going on over there, but keep it up.
